THE government is considering a proposal to allow duty-free imports of transmission equpnent required for new projects. The government allows zero-duty import of power generation projects while import of transmission equipment attracts a 5% duty.The move is aimed at rectifying this anomaly, a government official said, requesting anonymity. The power ministry is of the opinion that the duty waiver is essential to boost transmission sector, where investment to the. tune of 1,60,000 crore rupees is envisaged during the Seventh Plan period (2007-12).
