Exploring Proteins: A Student's Guide to Experimental Skills and Methods

This book has 11 chapters divided into 3 sections. Chapters 1-4 introduce concepts and tools, Chapter 5 gives an outline of the authors' idea of what information is sought about proteins and how to obtain this information, and Chapters 6-11 discuss data acquisition and handling. The Foreword states that the book is neither a textbook nor a research manual, but instead seeks to develop students' confidence. Each chapter starts with an outline of key concepts, includes questions in the text for students to self-test, then provides discussion of the reasoning that goes into solving the problem and shows the solution. At the end of each chapter there is a list of problems with the answers to the odd-numbered questions given in a web supplement called the Online Resource Center (not reviewed) that is available to registered students and instructors. Each page has interesting information in margin notes.
