Soul of the power system: exploring the distribution system

WE OFTEN REFER TO TRANS-mission systems as the heart of the electric power system. If that is the case, then I offer that the distribution system is its soul, as it reaches down to the ultimate consumer. I am deeply indebted for the intense effort expended by Mani Venkata and Hugh Rud-nick, two highly respected experts, to produce this issue, which is so far ranging. I deem this issue a companion to several that have preceded it, specifically those devoted to aging infrastructure and substation automation and distributed generation.
