University wins award for sustainable building

De Montfort University's Institute of Energy and Sustainable Development has won the Building Services Environmental Initiative Award 2006 for its work on University College London's School of Slavonic and East European Studies (SSEES), which opened in November. The IESD had to find a way to naturally ventilate the building instead of using air conditioning, but it presented a number of challenges. Naturally ventilated buildings cool down overnight to help maintain comfortable temperatures during the day - but the SSEES was near the hottest part of London. It means at night it is 5 deg C warmer than areas outside the capital.
