Society of Economic Geologists Silver Medal for 2001 Citation of Richard J. Goldfarb

President Dummett, members of the Society: The SEG Silver Medal is awarded in the recipient's "midcareer" for "excellence in original work in the geology of mineral deposits." Rich Goldfarb is clearly a geoscientist who is worthy of such an award. Some geoscientists make important individual contributions in research hut do not make an impact on other aspects of scientific endeavor and fellowship. Rich Goldfarb is a major exception to this because, in addition to making a major contribution to individual and team research of a cutting-edge nature, he has encouraged and contributed to major syntheses of well-endowed metallogenic regions poorly known to western geoscientists, and he has provided mentor-ship and assistance to young geoscientists. These themes shine through in the 18 supporting letters from geoscientists from eight individual countries and in the additional supporting letters from three SEG student chapters. Rich Goldfarb's original contributions to economic geology are many. In terms of thematic research, he has become the premier researcher in North America on orogenic (or mesothermal) gold deposits over the past decade. His research is innovative and synthetic, with integration of tectonic, structural, petrological, geochemical, and isotope data into deposit and genetic models that are stimulating academically and useful in mineral exploration.
