This book reviews current research on subduction systems in oceanic island-arc settings. The tectonic, structural, and magmatic processes in oceanic arcs are generally simpler than in continental margin arcs, where subduction is typically a protracted process and magmas are contaminated by sialic crust. The papers in this volume present the geometry and characteristics of well-known intra-oceanic subduction systems and the implications for an improved understanding of subduction-related tectonic, magmatic, and hydrothermal processes. The book provides an up-to-date understanding of oceanic subduction systems, beyond that presented by Tat-sumi and Eggins (1995) in Subduction Zone Magmatism. The latter reference is recommended for readers interested in general subduction processes. The book contains a total of 16 papers that vary in length from 14 to 30 pages. The general focus is on the geodynamics, magmatism, igneous rock geochemistry, geophysical signature, and, to a lesser extent, structural geology of subduction systems in east Asia, the southwest Pacific, and the west and south Atlantic. A general book description and list of contents, including titles and authors, are given on the Geological Society of London website . The introductory chapter presents a synopsis of the current research themes on island-arc subduction systems. The following papers focus on one or more of these themes by presenting the results of case studies from intra-oceanic arcs.
