Since he joined El Teniente mine in 1966, then the property of the Kennecott Copper Co., Francisco Camus has dedicated his entire career to mining and mineral exploration. As a recently graduated young geologist, this first professional experience in one of the worlds largest copper deposits, greatly influenced him and was the commencement of a lifelong affair with porphyry ore deposits. This review on the porphyry systems of the Chilean Andes comes to fruition after several years of detailed compilations and syntheses, complemented by the author's first-hand observational data and close involvement with many of the deposits described. The book is organized in nine sections of which the first, introductory one, reviews historic Chilean copper production data for the last two centuries (1801-2000). It is nicely complemented by historical, ca. 1910 to 1927, pictures of the El Teniente, Potrerillos, and Chuquicamata mines, as well as data concerning recent exploration expenditures, discoveries, and new mines that have catapulted Chilean copper production to its current world number one level. The remaining eight sections review the following main aspects of porphyry ore geology: Section 2: Tectonic framework of the Chilean Andes; Section 3: Tectonomagmatic evolution of porphyry systems; Section 4: Alteration and mineralization; Section 5: Supergene processes and effects; Section 6: Geologic descriptions of principal porphyry systems of the Chilean and southern Peruvian Andes; Section 7: Common factors in the formation of Andean porphyry systems; Section 8: Preferred genetic model; and Section 9: Final comments.
