Society of Economic Geologists Ralph W. Marsden Award for 2005 Citation of Tommy B. Thompson

President Dow, distinguished guests, members, and friends of the Society, and especially the more than 100 students from around the world who are attending this Conference: It is my pleasure and an honor today to present Tommy B. Thompson as the 2005 recipient of the Ralph W. Marsden Award. Ralph Marsden was a distinguished member of the Society and served the Society, the SEG Foundation, and the former Economic Geology Publishing Company as Treasurer from 1976 until his untimely death in late 1986. His outstanding sendce was recognized shortly thereafter with the establishment of this award bearing his name. Tommy Thompson is native of New Mexico and attended the University of New Mexico, from which he received a bachelor's degree in 1961, a master of science degree in 1963, and the Ph.D. degree in 1966-all in geology. Immediately upon completing his Ph.D. degree, he commenced an academic career that continues today: first at Oklahoma State University, from 1966 to 1973, then at Colorado State University, 1973 to 1995, where he achieved full professor status in 1980. Since 1997, Tommy has been director of the Ralph J. Roberts Center for Research in Economic Geology (CREG) and professor of Economic Geology at Mackay School of Mines at the University of Nevada, Reno.
