POLAND IN THE ECONOMIC AND MONETARY UNION

The objective of this study is to attempt to present the condition of Polish economy looking towards Poland's participation in the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). To achieve the above objective it was necessary: to present strategic macro-economicobjectives defined by the EMU creators, to provide the picture of convergence criteria to be met by EMU member states and, thereby, to be met by European Union candidate countries, to show which, out of the five convergence criteria, are met by Poland'seconomy and where compliance is the most difficult. Furthermore, compliance with convergence criteria in Poland during the period 1991-2000 has been analysed. In conclusion, benefits from EMU and arguments against are presented as well as the comparisonbetween EURO zone and the United States.
