The government's energy review, unveiled after much leakage and pre-empting by the politicians, did not in the end actually decide anything much, though its analysis of the options was comprehensive. But if the message was slightly coded, nobody now seems to be in any doubt that, after the requisite flurry of green and white papers, a planning review or two and maybe some other advanced paperwork, the UK will start building nuclear power stations again in the not-too-distant future. Whether that building process can be made fast enough to ensure that there is no energy gap between the retirement of the present stations and the arrival of the new ones is uncertain. And that is one reason why the energy debate will put engineering back in the forefront of the nation's consciousness.
