Reply to comments on: Geomechanical modeling of the nucleation process of the 1989 Newcastle earthquake in Australia

Geomechanical evidence shown by Klose (2007a,b) (henceforth referred to as Klose) indicated that the 1989 M5.6 Newcastle earthquake in Australia was likely triggered as result of more than 200 yr of coal mining, drew a critique by Quinn et al. (2008-this issue) (henceforth referred to as Quinn et al.). However, the basis of Quinn et al.'s conclusions was reached by using inappropriate data sets and flawed argumentations. Specifically, the authors used seismological and geological data sets that were incomparable to the targeted geographic area examined by Klose and, thus,contributing to different results. Moreover, the authors failed to provide any evidence to substantiate their own arguments regarding a nature-triggered versus mining-triggered seismogenesis in the Hunter Valley region located in New South Sales, Australia.
