BASF to raise butanediol capacity at Geismar

BASF today said that it will raise its global capacity for 1,4-butanediol (BDO) to 670,000 m.t./year from the current 650,000 m.t./year. The expansion includes a 10 capacity hike at Geismar, LA, which is slated to be onstream in 2016. BASF has declined to give Geismar's current capacity. The company says it is also looking into further measures to strengthen and expand its BDO value chain at Geismar by optimizing the relevant raw materials and debottlenecking existing operational limitations in the BDO plant. The project follows an announcement in July 2013 that the company will raise its BDO capacity from 535,000 m.t./year to 650,000 m.t./year within two years.
