CONSULTATION ON PART B BUILDING REGULATIONS--FIRE SAFETY

The review of AD B was begun in 2003 and has drawn upon recent experience and taken into account the findings of relevant research. Stakeholders participated in both the 'Backward Look', which evaluated the implementation of the 2000 edition of AD B, and the forward Look', which considered what issues a new AD B should address. For the Forward Look, over 200 people including architects, building control surveyors, fire service officers, fire consultants, local authorities and manufacturers contributed through a series of regional workshops and an electronic web-based questionnaire. Although fire safety is a broad subject, three strong common themes did emerge: fire safety management and particularly the importance of ensuring that information about the fire safety design of the building is passed on to the person responsible for its management; the important role of residential sprinklers; and the need for improved guidance with respect to means of escape for disabled people.
