Having lived and worked in Malaysia for the last three years I continue to notice amusing differences between here and the UK. In fact, Malaysia never fails to surprise me. For example, when scaffolding went up at our condominium recently for re-painting I expected it to be the usual steel and board construction used back home. Clearly, I still haven't learnt things are often done differently here. Erected entirely from 2" stripped tree branches and lashed together with rope, it seemed a precarious structure. It balanced on sharpened poles at ground level and the total lack of floorboards, ladders and hand rails also did nothing to reassure me that the workers who shinned up bare-footed every morning would return safely at night.
