NON-TRADITIONAL HOUSES--IDENTIFYING NON-TRADITIONAL HOUSES IN THE UK 1918-75

The UK construction industry once again is turning to Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) to meet our growing demand for high quality, affordable, and energy efficient housing. A shortage for skilled tradesman, poor on-site quality control and increased technical requirements mean that MMC can offer significant advantages over traditional construction methods, by utilising prefabricated construction systems that are built in factories and assembled onsite. However, this is not the first time we as a nation have turned to such technologies to solve housing shortages. In fact the UK has a strong history of non-traditional house building dating back to the early twentieth century, but a commonly held perception is that prefabs are ugly, poor quality and unsafe despite many serving their owners, and occupants, well beyond their design life.
