China eyes marine hydrates

China plans to start drilling in the northern sector of the South China Sea this May in a bid to discover methane hydrates.Jin Qinghuan, chief scientist of the Guangzhou survey and mapping bureau at the Ministry of Land and Resources, said China plans to start trial production of marine methane hydrates between 2010 and 2015, and to start commercial production around 2020, according to state news agency Xinhua.
