Proper care can prevent expensive riser failures. Risers, key links between subsea components and topside drilling rigs or production platforms, merit a big shot of technology as operators battle a host of ailments that could cause premature failure, spills and loss of production revenues. It's not uncommon to see riser systems cover more than a mile (1.6 km) from the surface to the seabed, and steel catenary riser (SCR) lengths are getting longer. With those longer lengths, risers experience more stress and fatigue. Added materials, such as buoyancy wraps, complicate the riser's reaction to currents and eddies.
