Downhole problems are difficult to address because they are not visible. How often has an engineer said, "If I could only see what's going on, I know I could solve this?" The idea of seeing what is happening in a well is what inspired the development of electrical logging devices. In fact, one of the early logging tool providers used the slogan, "The eyes of the oil industry." That was a bit of a stretch, given the appearance of the early well logs.
