A building constructed to the PassivHaus standard should have excellent internal conditions in both winter and summer months. However, the real challenge is that a PassivHaus must achieve a significant energy saving of 90% when compared to existing buildings. That is incredibly difficult but, with careful planning, design and the right choice of materials, it can be done. In any type of building, insulation has a fundamental role to play but when you take a PassivHaus it really can make a significant contribution to achieving the principles required. Typically, the whole building envelope would need to have very high levels of insulation combined with minimal thermal bridges. Any gaps and cracks in the building fabric, which could create heat loss, must be less than 0.6 times the house volume per hour under negative and positive pressurisation.
