In 1958, just a few months following the successful launch of Sputnik I, the US President's Science Advisory Committee released a little report tided "Introduction to Outer Space." In it four factors were provided that "give the importance, urgency, and inevitability to die advancement of space technology." Strategic defense, national prestige, and the furthering of scientific knowledge were seen as key motivators.
