Redesigning a directional system gets LWD sensors closer to the bit for better well placement. Directional (non-vertical) wells represent an ever-increasing percentage of overall drilling activity in the US, and operators continually seek to drill slimmer wells at tighter curvature. Increasingly long tool assemblies have meant that logging-while-drilling (LWD) sensors are often displaced significant distances from the bit.
