The Permian Basin offers a variety of challenges, yet with advanced technology the secrets of the basin are slowly being unlocked. The rig count in the region has increased dramatically, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). In its May 15, 2014, report, "Permian Basin Drives First-quarter Growth in Oil-directed Horizontal Drilling Rigs," authors Philip Budzik and Michael Ford said, "The Permian Basin, a longtime oil- and natural gas-producing region in West Texas and southeastern New Mexico, has seen a significant increase in horizontal oil-directed drilling activity over the past five months."
