CSR is primarily influenced by coal charge density, coal ash chemistry composition and inherent strength of the coke. Under 'normal' cokemaking conditions, CSR and CRI can be improved by decreasing coal ash basicity, increasing the inherent strength of the coke and maintaining coal rheology properties. Controlling CRI is a requirement for controlling CSR. The following CSR prediction equation is used for coal selection and coal value analysis: CSR(percent) = 83.217-167.801 (Coal Basicity Index) + 147.816 (Coal Basicity Index)~2 In order to produce a CSR of 60 percent, the coal basicity index of purchase coals have to be < = 0.161. In order to produce a CSR of 65 percent in the future, the coal basicity index of purchase coals will have to be < = 0.121.
