The stated policy of local, national and international governments is for sustainable development, so that we can live within the earth's capacity to provide for our activities and to absorb the waste and pollution that our activities generate. To meet this challenge and adopt solutions that will create healthy buildings and environments that enhance the quality of life for all - both now and into the future -designers would be wise to learn from the best buildings of the past as well as from successful contemporary designs.
