Without amplifiers you can't hear anything from your sound system. Often they form the largest cost when purchasing a sound system, yet we often hide them away in a rack and never see them again. With newer amplifier designs the power to weight ratio has improved and they are not the heavy lumps they used to be. They are smaller, lighter and more powerful. Another development is the advent of more multichannel amplifiers. Rather than amplifiers just being stereo there are more four channel and eight channel amplifiers, which means you can run a multiple zone sound system using much less equipment than before, and your equipment racks can be smaller.
