Whenever problems arise with the indoor environment of a building, thoughts invariably turn to Sick Building Syndrome (SBS) and a review of possible causes and solutions will follow. The key causes are fairly well known and will include the pros and cons of air tightness and energy conservation versus ventilation for occupants; thermal comfort, air conditioning and control of the indoor climate; and environmental factors such as lighting levels, radon, moisture, damp, moulds, etc. While solutions may appear harder to find, many of the causes can be reduced or even eliminated by adopting natural solutions for ventilation and lighting.
