The need to protect car parks from the risk of fire is all too evident. Latest available figures show that 116 fires occurred in UK car parks, of which 60 started in vehicles, with one of them spreading to nine other vehicles. About half of these fires were started deliberately. Consideration must, therefore, be given to safety measures that can be incorporated into the design of a car park - including smoke control and smoke clearance systems, which are increasingly being used to protect basement and enclosed car parks. The first step in protecting a car park against the risk of fire is to decide what level of protection is needed and then to calculate the floor area of the car park.
