MINISTER LAUNCHES NEW CONSTRUCTION WASTE STANDARD FOR WALES

Minister for the Environment, Sustainability and Housing, Jane Davidson, has helped Constructing Excellence in Wales (CEW) launch a new scheme for waste management companies, called Green Compass. This is a tremendous step forward for Wales and is one of a number of initiatives being developed by CEW that will help industry manage construction waste. Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste in Wales is a big problem. In 2005, 33 per cent of the 8 million tonnes of waste that went to licensed waste sites in Wales was C&D waste. Much of this waste is easily recycled, yet it is going to landfill. Green Compass is an initial step to making sure waste is handled in a responsible, environmentally friendly manner.
