On 21 August, Barry Bedford and John Gray visited ABE HQ to deliver an update on the progress of the West Yorkshire Building Control Apprenticeship Alliance. There are currently 15 apprentices on the scheme, which is supported by Leeds, Wakefield, Kirklees, Calderdale and Bradford Councils. Over the next few months, three of these Authorities are looking to recruit further apprentices into Building Control roles. Following on from the highly successful three-day residential programme, held in Bradford in April, a further two one-day sessions were being held in September and another three-day residential programme is being developed for later this year. This is as a direct result from feedback received from students in April who expressed a desire to further their knowledge in specific areas. The sessions in September covered the areas of Fire Spread (a workshop for calculating unprotected areas), and, domestic Steel Beam design.
