DESIGNING A NEW SYSTEM BACKPLANE involves many disciplines, including the application-specific functions and generic blocks that are part of any telecom or data system. These generic blocks, such as mechanical design, EMI integrity, backplanes, power supplies, and shelf management, are common to all designs. They do not contribute to a design's differentiation and from an RD perspective can be considered overhead. On the other hand, system-related features are application- and implementation-specific and enable system vendors to introduce new and unique features that differentiate their products from the competition's.
