Marque Wars I: New Zealand V8 Touring Cars

ANEW SALOON CLASS inNewZealand motorsport, called TraNZam Lites, was launched in 1994. The class stalled completely in its first season for lack of entries, and didn't actually get under way until the following year. TraNZam Lites were created as an intermediate, cost-controlled class, a support category to the premier saloon car class of the time, TraNZam. Based on the American Trans-Am class, TraNZam catered to full-space-framed race cars, with normally aspirated (no forced induction) V8 engines up to 5,000cc in capacity, and clothed infibreglass or carbon-fibre silhouette bodies. The body-shells were loosely modelled on standard production road vehicles such as Ford's Mustang and Chevrolet's Camaro and Corvette, so that American race-goers could identity them as similar to the cars they drive themselves on the street.
