There is no avoiding the fact that the current-economic climate is causing problems for the construction industry. Developers are losing money and cutting jobs and every week seems to bring yet more bad news. As if to rub salt into the wound, whilst 167,577 new homes were built in the public and private sectors during 2007, this year the predicted figure looks set to shrink to less than 100,000. In stark contrast, pressure is mounting on local government and the construction industry alike to meet the ambitious goals outlined in the Government Housing Green Paper which set the target of delivering three million new homes by 2020. Despite warnings from the National Housing Federation that this target is 'almost impossible' to meet, the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) is sticking by its guns and remains committed to the target as a long-term aim.
