Precast concrete can make a major contribution to the construction industry in terms of buildability, certainty, quality, safety, efficiency and sustainability. And yet, despite these compelling advantages, there are several perceived barriers that have detracted from its value and prevented its wider uses. The most common criticisms levied at precast are costs, lead times, logistics and aesthetics. In seeking to dispel some of these myths, it is worth explaining in more detail the role the precaster plays in a construction project. Understanding the number and variety of functions that the precaster has to undertake may go a long way towards explaining why, in particular, costs are perceived to be high and lead times lengthy.
