Heat and power unit manufacturer WhisperGen has come up with an innovative way to use its waste heat. CLAIRE LE COUTEUR takes a dip at Christchurch's Centennial Pool. CHRISTCHURCH COMPANY WHISPERGEN is contributing to energy conservation in hundreds of European homes with its combined heat and power (CHP) units based on the Stirling engine. But it's also playing a role at home. WhisperGen tests its microCHP system units 24 hours a day, producing electricity for the grid and hot water, which until recently was a waste product vented to the atmosphere. Chief Operating Officer Bill Highet and Technical Director Dr. Don Clucas FIPENZ often use the Centennial Pool for relaxation and exercise. About two years ago, they came up with the idea of using the waste heat to heat the pool complex, which is directly across the road from their factory.
