Kiwi expat Dr Richard Gapes and his group at the Vienna University of Technology have developed several innovative processes for converting oils and fats to biodiesel - one of them especially suited to utilising New Zealand's waste streams for fuel production. The authors background the economics and production of biodiesel, and detail the potential of the new technologies.
