WATER WILL RUN OUT, LORDS SELECT COMMITTEE WARNED

The taps to half a million new homes could run dry unless there is a rethink, was the message given by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) to a House of Lords Select Committee. The Government is demanding over half a million new homes over the next 15 years and a large portion of them will be in the East of England. ICE is concerned the current provision for water supplies will not be enough. In his evidence to the Select Committee on Science and Technology which is looking into water management, John Canton, ICE Regional Manager for the East of England, called for new investment, better demand management and far more rigorous Building Regulations. If this cannot be achieved then the number of new homes must be reduced or people will risk running short of water, something already threatened with recent low rainfalls.
