Data destruction falls short in AERC survey

Nearly 90 percent of companies do not have a data destruction plan in place or understand how to destroy their data securely, according to a new study released by AERC Recycling Solutions. Over 600 companies were polled in the AERC survey - 90 percent of which generate electronics for recycling. While most expressed solid support for recycling and 40 percent even going so far as to say it actually reduces their cost of doing business, the data management practices by surveyed firms left much to be desired. A third (33 percent) does not know how their data is handled and simply place their trust in their electronics recycling firm to manage it. Slightly less (30 percent) do not know how their data is secured at all, and over 27 percent simply erase files from their used computers.
