摘要

Phase one of the conservation of the famous Listening Mirrors, near Dungeness on Romney Marshes, by structural engineer Cameron Taylor Bedford (CTB), is nearing completion. The three Large mirror concrete structures, two circular dishes 20ft and 30ft wide respectively, along with a 200ft wide wall, were built by The Royal Engineers in the Late 1920s at Lade Pit, Greatstone, Kent. The enormous structures, now listed as Scheduled Ancient Monuments, sit in a former quarry. Gravel extraction had undermined the three structures significantly, creating two Large Lakes on either side in the process. The Mirrors, left on a causeway, wereunsteadily balanced on a gravel foundation and were being undermined by wave action of water in the lakes. The 20ft mirror was cracked, and tilting precariously, while foundations to the 30ft mirror were seriously exposed by gravel extraction and wave action.
