River Bourne Community Farm in Salisbury officially opened their new straw bale classroom in January. Constructed entirely of straw, without a timber frame, the walls are self-supporting under a cedar shingle roof. The building is expected to significantly outperform masonry and timber frame construction thermally and acoustically. The build was also quick, with minimal waste heading to landfill and a small carbon footprint. The building has very low running costs and is easily maintained, so why aren't there more of them?This project demonstrates what is possible with a little imagination and thinking outside the box. The build outperforms masonry in every respect from efficiency to cost and even waste. The only barrier to this type of construction is people's misconceptions. Ben Parker is the founder of River Bourne Community Farm and a fierce advocate of the project: 'It was the obvious solution to our needs. Working in Partnership with Natural England we needed an ecologically sensitive, aesthetically pleasing design that we could afford to build and run.'
