Various pieces of legislation, as well as planning policy guidance, protect certain plants and animals or require the consideration or enhancement of biodiversity during building works. These impacts are seen in urban as well as rural sites; bats live in domestic and other buildings all over the country in both urban and rural areas; and one protected species of moss is a specialist of thatched roofs.
