For many occupations, a set of nationally recognised standards has been developed to set the level of performance that individuals must achieve when carrying out functions in the workplace. The standards also include specifications of the underpinning knowledge and understanding required to carry out a role. The National Occupational Standards (NOS) describe what an individual needs to do, know and understand in order to carry out a particular job role or function, and are statements of effective performance which have been agreed by a representative sample of employers and other key stakeholders and approved by the UK NOS Panel.
