As the first corporate manslaughter charges are brought against an engineering company any person who is in a senior management position should take careful note of this case and the relevant health and safety legislation. The British Safety Council has recently issued their second annual survey into the attitudes of bosses and workers to safety in the work place. This survey initially revealed that 95 percent of bosses said they were confident about what they were legally required to do to make their work place safe. However, when they were quizzed on this, further worrying gaps in their knowledge became apparent. A quarter (26 percent) of them were not aware of the three most recent main pieces of safety legislation and advice, Health and Safety (Offences) Act 1978, the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007 and the Institute of Directors Guidance for Directors.
