GARDEN CITY OF NEW DELHI THREATENED

The green environment of New Delhi is continually under threat from developers. Plans for New Delhi were conceived a century ago by architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, together with fellow architect Sir Herbert Baker and members of the New Delhi Urban Planning commission. Laid out with wide avenues, open spaces and hundreds of thousands of trees, the vision of the urban planners has ensured that generations of New Delhi's citizens have enjoyed recreational benefits and a healthy environment that few cities provide. The city's famed 'green lung' is more than ever needed in today's world of global climate change. However, with a fast growing population, that legacy is endangered as pressures of development have in recent years threatened theintegrity of the garden city character of New Delhi.
