THE CONCRETS SOCIETY AWARDS 2008

The Annual Concrete Society Awards Dinner has been held in London, celebrating the best in concrete construction. An audience of over 400 people packed into the London Marriott Grosvenor Square to see the presentation of a number of project awards. The 2008 Building Category winner was St Marylebone CE School, Performing Arts Centre in London - a predominantly underground facility housing a gymnasium, dance studios, music and art departments. Concrete was the natural material of choice for the underground retaining structure but the design team leapt at the opportunity of using fair-faced concrete simultaneously for its structural, waterproofing, thermal, casting and aesthetic properties. Judges described the project as 'a building of the highest order' and concrete 'is a tour de force throughout'.
