The biological activities of the phenolic compounds isolated from Alpinia flabellata were examined with respect to the antibacterial property and transport regulation of ovalbumin (OVA) across the human intestinal cells. Some trimethoxylated phenolics showed remarkable antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. 4-Hydroxy-2-(2,4,5-trimethosyphenyl)-2-E-butenal showed the highest activity among the isolated compounds. Trans-1-(2,4,5-Trimethoxy-E-styryl)-2-(2,4,5-trimethosy-Z-styryl)cyclobutane showed higher activity than the cis isomer. The trimethoxyphenyl and formyl groups in the molecule played an important role in the antibacterial activity. In the model experiment of intestinal permeability using Caco-2 cell monolayers, cis-1-(2,4,5-trimethoxy-E-styryl)-2,4,5-trimethosy-Z-styryl)cyclobutane significantly decreased the OVA permeability.
