ROCK SOLID SOLUTION INJECTS NEW LIFE INTO LIVERPOOL'S STONEWORK

Stone block construction, seen in many of our listed buildings, traditionally used a method of casting pockets into the top surface of the blocks. These pockets contained lifting eyes, which were basically exposed steel loops that enabled the heavy blocks to be lifted into place. Once the blocks had been laid into position, a hook tie was wrapped around these loops forming a wall tie for the subsequent inner skin of brickwork. The pockets were then filled with the bedding mortar for the next layer of blocks. Unfortunately, as this mortar is of a porous nature, over the years it allows moisture ingress into the exposed steel loop. Subsequenty, the loops and wall ties corrode causing the block to crack at this location.
