An organic light emitting diode (OLED) based on the tris (8-hydroxyquinolinolato) aluminum (111) (Alq{sub}3) emissive layer was fabricated on the ITO coated polyethylene-terephtalate (PET) substrate for application on a flexible electro-optical conversion device. The emission characteristics of the OLED fabricated on the ITO-coated PET substrate are almost similar to that of an OLED fabricated on an ITO-coated glass substrate. Optical pulses of 25 MHz have been obtained from an OLED based on the Alq{sub}3 emissive layer with the active area of 0.05 mm{sup}2 fabricated on the ITO -coated PET substrate. We demonstrated that the OLEDs could be used in the fields of optical communication as a flexible electro-optical conversion device for transmitting moving picture signals.
