The effects of preparingmethods and enzymesupplementationon the utilization ofbrown marine algae(Sargassum dentifebium)meal in the diet of layinghens

Brown marine algae (BMA; Sargassum dentifebium)were collected from Jeddah on theshores of the Red Sea and sun dried at an averagedaily temperature of 40°C until constantweight was obtained. Part of the sun driedbrown marine algae was subsequentlyprocessed by boiling (BBMA; boiled brownmarine algae) in water and by autoclaving(ABMA; autoclaved brown marine algae). TheSBMA, BBMA and ABMA were included in layinghen diet during weeks 23-42 of age at concentrationsof 0.0%, 3.0% and 6.0%. The dietswere given with or without enzyme supplementation.This resulted in 3 (preparationmethods) × 2 (concentrations of supplementedBMA, i.e. 3 and 6%) × 2 (with and withoutenzyme supplementation) diet programs plustwo control groups (with and without enzymesupplementation) for a total of 14 treatments.Each treatment was represented by six replicatesof five hens each. Sun dried or autocalvedbrown marine algae at 3% withoutenzyme supplementation in the laying hen dietcould be fed to laying hens without any adverseeffect on laying performance. However,enzyme supplementation to a diet containing6% autocalved brown marine algae improvedproductive performance and eggshell quality.
