Many people have linked deforestation and timber harvesting in general to increased flooding. Others have argued that trees (such as Eucalyptus spp.) cause rivers ands streams to dry up. Things aren't that simple, says Sampurno Bruijnzeel in a 2004 article entitled "Hydrological Functions of Tropical Forests, Not Seeing the Soil for the Trees" (Agriculture, Ecosystems, and Environment 104(185-228)).
