C.R.M. and Cockerill Sambre succeeded in measuring continuously iron and slag levels in the hearth of blast furnace B at Ougree with a probe installed in the unused taphole. The voidage of the coke bed present in the hearth is derived from the recorded data. Simultaneous measurements of the electromotive force (emf) allowed to study the relationship between both measurements. With a view to progress towards a calibration of emf data in terms of liquid level, some interfering variables were identified. Finally, the paper describes through examples how the emf measurements are used on a day to day basis to improve cast management at blast furnace B of Cockerill Sambre at Ougree.
